Overview

Global Communities is an international development non-profit organization. Our mission is to create long-lasting, positive and community-led change that improves the lives and livelihoods of vulnerable people across the globe. 

 

Global Communities is seeking an Intern for the upcoming Winter and Spring semesters to learn about its community engagement program in Moline, Illinois. The Intern will work with a four-person team to learn how to implement, manage, and support a project that focuses on empowering the residents of the Floreciente neighborhood in Moline, Illinois to be able to access more resources to improve their quality of life. The specific objectives of the program are to:

  • Create an engaged, supportive and collaborative network of NGOs and policy makers that rally their collective efforts to deliver strategic programs.
  • Empower residents and other stakeholders to implement strategic neighborhood revitalization projects, including social services.
  • Facilitate economic development opportunities for small businesses and households in Floreciente by connecting them with the broader Quad Cities economy.

 

This is an unpaid internship and the Intern will volunteer their time according to the requirements of their university to fulfill either graduation or credit requirements.  This time will be during regular business hours at the Global Communities’ office in downtown Moline, Illinois.

 

The Intern will learn about all aspects of nonprofit management including programming, administration, finance, outreach, communications, and performance valuation. To facilitate this learning, the intern will assist with database and performance management, program communications and outreach to stakeholders and community members, and program reports to donors. The Intern will work closely with all staff members in the Global Communities-Moline office and participate in staff, community, and stakeholder meetings.

 

 

Responsibilities

Learning Objectives and Responsibilities:

  • Learn about community development, economic development, and neighborhood revitalization projects by participating in staff, community, and stakeholder meetings and reading reports about the program’s objectives, methodology, and achievements.
  • Gain an understanding of the community development process from start to finish, with a particular emphasis on establishing partnerships with local organizations and community members.
  • Learn about nonprofit and program management by assisting with database management, performance management, and the drafting of reports to donors.
  • Learn how to develop effective programmatic communications for outreach to stakeholders by drafting communications about current activities and results, including but not limited to building a social media presence, drafting one-pagers, press releases, success stories, and flyers. Practice using database management and communications tools, such as Nationbuilder, as well as Microsoft Word and PowerPoint.

Final Written Deliverable:

  • The Intern will be required to submit to Global Communities copies of all documents and deliverables required by the Intern’s University.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills. Fluency in English required.
  • Spanish language proficiency and/or fluency (written and spoken) is highly preferred, but not required.
  • Ability to interact with all levels of staff in a professional manner.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office required. Willingness to learn new software required.

 

Qualifications

Internship Requirements:

 

  • Must be actively enrolled in an undergraduate degree program and undertaking this unpaid internship for academic credit or to fulfill a graduation requirement.
  • Demonstrated interest in community and/or economic development and an ability to build and maintain relationships with stakeholders and partners
  • Local knowledge regarding Floreciente and community development in the Quad Cities is preferred.
  • Must comply with Global Communities Policies, Protocols, and Procedures during time of internship.
  • Must have valid U.S. work authorization.
