Global Communities is seeking a Technical Director of Economic Growth to join the Partnerships and Programs team at the headquarters in downtown Silver Spring, Maryland.
Over the last decade, Global Communities’ economic development programs have focused on integrating vulnerable and at-risk groups into market opportunities in a variety of complex environments. Generally, our programs have covered the following themes:
Our MSME Development and Entrepreneurship programs have worked with micro, small and medium enterprises to leverage opportunities for growth through improvements in production and quality control, business management, and facilitation of new market linkages. We have also strengthened the capacity of new and growing entrepreneurs with technical skills so they can better access finance, create and grow cooperatives, and access market information, leading to increased sales, employment and incomes.
We seek an experienced Technical Director with the background and capacity to develop and oversee programs aligned with our MSME Development and Entrepreneurship portfolio especially in the areas of access to finance and financial inclusion. The Technical Director will work closely with the Senior Director and Portfolio Growth Manager to develop and execute a strategy that leverages Global Communities’ expertise and positions the organization to continue to implement high quality programming in this sector. The Technical Director will supervise HQ and field-based staff, providing technical leadership and actively mentoring and supporting the professional development of his/her staff. Further, the Technical Director will represent Global Communities externally, expanding the organization’s visibility and participation in the economic growth sectors.
1. Oversees project implementation:
a. Oversees performance of assigned programs and fulfillment of project deliverables, as well as builds relations with key stakeholders.
b. Ensures field teams have needed technical support (directly providing technical assistance within key sub-sectors and overseeing technical consultants)
c. Collaborates with other organizational units to effectively support program implementation and address operational and programmatic questions and challenges
2. Develop and support business development efforts:
a. Engages actively with donors, private sector and other humanitarian and development organizations
b. Leads or contributes significantly to proposal efforts from capture to submission
c. Oversees or conducts field assessments
d. Develops partnerships
3. Thought leadership:
a. Contributes to knowledge capture and dissemination of key learnings via journals articles, conference proceedings, social media, and internal papers.
b. Promotes innovation, and improved methodologies, products, and implementation through the Collaborating, Learning, & Adapting (CLA) approach.
c. Encourages and facilitates participation of staff in technical workshops, conferences, and working groups.
4. Managerial leadership:
a. Supervises field and HQ based staff – managing performance and providing mentoring, coaching and training for staff
b. Actively promotes effective collaboration and cooperation across business units and teams
