POSITION SUMMARY:

Assist the General Counsel & Chief Ethics Officer in providing legal, ethics, operational and policy guidance to management, business units and branch offices worldwide. Assists with oversight of various legal operational interests.

Responsibilities

PRIMARY POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:

Responsibility Area: Ethics

  • Partner with the General Counsel & Chief Ethics Officer in the day-to-day operations of Global Communities ethics program
  • Conduct investigations into alleged violations of Global Communities Standards of Conduct
  • Respond to ethics inquiries.

Responsibility Area: Training

  • Review and update Global Communities online ethics training course,
  • Assess performance of ethics program and recommends and implements improvements.
  • Draft, update, and provide applicable training and guidance on organizational policies and procedures, including but not limited to, organization’s Standards of Conduct, Watch List Policy, Anti-Trafficking Policy, and other policies as needed.

Responsibility Area:  Legal Research and Review

  • Conduct legal research and writing on multiple areas of law, including but not limited to, contracts, corporate, data privacy, employment, intellectual property, non-profit, and tax.
  • Interpret domestic and international laws and assist business units and branch offices understand their compliance obligations.

Responsibility Area: Global Support

  • Draft and review legal documents (e.g., contracts, leases, transactional documents, master service agreements, etc.) and provides written guidance highlighting areas of risk to the organization.
  • Draft legal document templates, as needed.
  • Review documents and drafts legal memoranda related to employment matters.
  • Provide legal support to subsidiaries in connection with international financial inclusion transactions.
  • Provide guidance on corporate governance matters.
  • Lead domestic and international branch office registrations.
  • Manage outside legal counsel on domestic and international trademark filings.
  • Select, work with, monitor, and evaluate domestic and international outside legal counsel.
  • Provide legal guidance during arbitration and litigation proceedings.
  • Prepare legal responses to Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests.

Other:

  • Undertake all other duties and projects as may be assigned.

POSITION SPECIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • 10% travel as needed, travel may include challenging locations.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Thorough knowledge and application of legal principles, concepts, practices, and standards.
  • Excellent oral communication skills. Ability to communicate and advise others on issues that are complex and/or sensitive in nature. Ability to communicate effectively with persons on all levels both inside and outside Global Communities.
  • Ability to perform advanced research that involves interpretation and analysis from a variety of sources.
  • Excellent business writing skills to effectively develop, compile, organize, and present information that requires subject knowledge, judgment, and/or persuasion.
  • Highly skilled in interpersonal communication including professionalism, discretion, and cultural sensitivity.
  • Fluency in English, written and oral; Abilities in a second language preferred.
  • Ability to perform work under minimal direction and participate in determining the objectives of an assignment.
  • Ability to work independently, plan schedule and arrange own activities in accomplishing objectives.
  • Capable of managing and allocating their time effectively, including the ability to participate in meetings in varying time zones.

Qualifications

  • JD from an accredited Law School. Must be a member of a state bar in good standing (Maryland preferred).
  • Minimum of five years of legal experience. International and/or nonprofit experience preferred but not required. 
  • A passion for the mission and values of Global Communities.

Location and Work Schedule 

This selected candidate can be based in Silver Spring, MD. Candidates must be authorized to work in their preferred country without any restriction.

 

This role is on a hybrid/telework schedule. The selected candidate is expected to work at least twice as week (Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday) from Silver Spring office and the remainder of the week from an approved remote location.

 

Salary and Compensation

The estimated salary for this position is between $105,394-144,916. Final salary will be based on several factors including qualifications, geographic location, experience, and internal equity. Global Communities provides a comprehensive benefits package; please note that this position is not eligible for allowances
